The book I chose for this discussion is “What Pet Should I Get?” By: Dr. Seuss. “What Pet Should I Get?” is a story about a brother and his sister, Kay, deciding on what pet to get. It’s also a story about making decisions, though they are hard sometimes. In this book, Dr. Seuss never reveals the pet that Kay and her brother chose, instead he left that decision up to the reader. I selected this book because it encourages language, cognitive, and moral development. “At the ages 3-5 years, vocabulary continues to expand; grammatical morphemes are added; and children begin to adjust their speech to listeners, they often ignore problems in messages they receive.”(Kail 2010) “What Pet Should I Get?” encourages language growth on many levels. In part of the book while deciding what pet Kay and her brother should get, her brother describes many pets and the reasons their mother may or not like them and why they would not be able to get said pet. This is key example of understanding reasoning, which can be present in a form that a child can understand. The entire basis of the book is a prime illustration of problem solving, Kay and her brother are presented with numerous choices of pets, but are only allowed to acquire one. Furthermore, the book ends with the reader having to make the decision of what pet Kay and her brother got. Lastly, moral development. Throughout “What Pet Should I Get?” Kay and her brother are talking and listening to one another about what pets they see, like, and which they would choose. Also, Kay and brother continuously exclaim in the book that their father said to pick one, and their mother said to be back by noon, symbolism the importance of listening to their parents.
