The free verse novel, What My Mother Doesn’t Know, by Sonya Sones, tells about the romantic and family issues that fifteen-year-old, Sophie, goes through. Sophie, like any other teenage girl wants love and romance. She thinks that she has found the one when she meets Dylan. After a while, Sophie sees that he isn’t perfect and realizes that isn’t how the world goes. This relationship brings up many issues and lower Sophie down. Her parents are doing her any better. They both continuously fight, and lack attention for Sophie. Sophie starts to think that she likes Murphy, a boy who is often made fun of and looked as inferior. She has to decide, will she go for her heart? Or will she go for the crowd?
