French Indochina France, one of history’s most notorious empires, retained its power throughout the age of imperialism by adopting ideas like the White man’s burden and the need to colonize several preoccupied lands. One particular region was French Indochina, a joint group of independent nations controlled by France in the Southeast Asian area. Given a need to protest, a resolution to violence, through rebellions, felt justified by the negligence made in the taxing policies. As a result of the unexpected westernization, natives were extremely unaccustomed to high taxes, resulting in natives struggling to pay them off and pushing more people into poverty. This demonstrates how French colonization was purely selfish and how disrespect burdened natives. As a result of poorly thought policies, the Annamites fought to survive each day, barely able to pay off taxes and support themselves with limited land. Even when France grew the country economically, the natives had too much financial weight to benefit from it. According to LSU: “As a mother country, France even gave Indochina a stable market in which to sell goods. Ultimately, however, the economic progress did not help the peasants. Although Indochina did show development from colonization, locals, specifically peasants, were halted from this development. Again, this widened socioeconomic gaps, and barely leveled financial issues France displaced on the people. France’s economic progress in Indochina did not outweigh the exploitation, cultural destruction, financial effects on the individual level, etc. Although there were advancements, it neglected peasants, representing the minimal gains colonization had on local populations. French colonization was overall destructive to the people, through their selfish decisions and impacts.

Imperialism has severely affected French Indochina, and through their loss of independence and damage to the underrepresented, Indochina suffered but ultimately grew to how it is today. Imperialism, colonialism, or any concept or idea in the world is one sided. Imperialism cannot only be expected to be good nor bad, as how French Indochina is not defined through its development in Indochina nor its poor offenses and exploitation of the people.
