Your Character Will Be What You Yourself Choose To Make It Essay

“Your character will be what you yourself choose to make it” is a quote by British naturalist and politician, John Lubbock. I strongly agree with his quote for several reasons. I believe Lubbock’s meaning behind his quote is that no person can allow society to determine the mental characteristics he or she contains. In all seven billion people in the world, not a single one of them carries the same characteristics as any other person. If society is in control of how we act then it is impossible for us to be the way we are meant to be. America is a free country and allows us all to be able to express our character traits in any way we wish. As far as identical twins go, they may look exactly the same but it is nearly impossible for them to be interested in all of the same things and nothing extra. If everyone in the world, or even in a single country, acted the same way and believed in all of the same things, there would be no excitement. Everyone would listen to the same songs, watch the same television shows, and eat the same meals for dinner. It would be as if everyone in the U.S. only listened to Beyonce and the one person who prefered listening to Luke Bryan would be too scared to go against the societal norm so they would also be forced to be confined to only listening to Beyonce. Also, there would be no need for any other entertainers due to Beyonce being superior to all, resulting in several people losing their job in the music industry. In the U.S., we have the privilege to be able to believe in any religion we wish to believe in, we are able to have our own opinion on any topic of conversation, we can do almost anything we want to without risking jail time, and we can come together as a nation and elect new government officials. Sadly, this cultural norm we have in the U.S. is not the case for several Asian, African, and South American countries. Some of these countries participate in a dictatorship which is almost always a horrible idea. As for some of the South American countries such as Venezuela, elections are held, but are often rigged resulting in governmental issues. Terrible riots are happening in Venezuela today due to their election scandal which resulted in Nicolás Maduro as president. The citizens of this country do not get to practice their right to vote and elect a president they believe will be good for their country, so they do not get to expand their cultural horizon and find out what truly will be good for their country. The crisis in Venezuela has happened in several other South American countries such as Colombia and El Salvador as well. Another example of the government interfering in people’s lives and preventing them from learning who they, as people, truly are is North Korea.
