What Makes You American
(The Freedom and Right to Follow Your Dreams) What does it mean to be a citizen? What does it mean to be a part of a country? I believe that being a citizen is much more than just living in the same country for a certain number of years. There could be several ways ' people could define a citizen. For example, people might say that being a citizen means that you take act in good deeds and make your country a better place. Working hard to donate to your country is also another great trait a citizen could convey. Others might believe that a good citizen portrays kindness, generosity and a helping hand. Different countries will have different interpretations of what a citizen means and does. Being a part of a country does not just mean you are a citizen it could mean living with certain rights or even restrictions. "Every good citizen makes his country 's honor his own, and cherishes it not only as precious, but as scared. He is willing to risk his life in it 's defense and it 's conscious that he gains protection while he gives it," - Andrew Jackson. Being an American means having freedom, rights, and the ability to follow your dreams. Initially, having freedom is a huge part of being an American citizen. The American flag itself symbolizes freedom. We got our independence from Great Britain on July 4, 1776, and since then we have solely focused on how we are going to be a free country.
