After Prometheus stole fire from the gods to give to man, Zeus wanted to punish man by offering him something that looked irresistible yet was full of deception inside, just as Prometheus offered the gods bones covered in fat. To do this, Zeus brought together the gods to make the first woman who was named Pandora, or "all-gifts" because she would receive a different gift from each god. First, Zeus ordered Hephaestus to shape the form of a goddess out of clay, "to add human speech...and the lovely face of a maiden"(Hesiod 61). Following, Athena supplied her clothing and hair, then taught her to weave on a loom and womanly skills. To enhance her beauty, the Charites and Horae embellished her with jewelry and flowers, respectively. But
