What Makes Odysseus An Epic Hero

What made Odysseus an epic hero? Well, one thing that made him an epic hero was his intelligence. He showed his intelligence once when he told the cyclops his name was nobody. He also showed intelligence when he came up with the Trojan horse. That is one reason he is considered an epic hero. In order to be a hero a key quality you need is intelligence. That is almost better than strength. To have intelligence is such a blessing if you are a god. You can use strategy and outsmart them if you know your strength will not do the job, when being a god or goddess you cannot always be strong enough to conquer so your intelligence is the next best thing to have.

His intelligence is not the only thing that made him an epic hero. Another thing that made him an epic hero was his loyalty. Loyalty means a lot to the gods and goddesses. He was very loyal to his wife and in the house and that is proof of greatness. To be an un loyal god or goddess means you have lost all credibility. It is easy to slip up and be un loyal to everyone else but to stay loyal to your wife and everyone around you shows how smart and strong you really are. Being loyal is a strong quality to have as a god or goddess.

Second reason, after nine days they left Ismarus, they went to a land called Lotus Eater, and Odysseus got curious about the mainlanders and “sent out two picked men and a runner” (Homer 200), and because he was coward and sacrificed them instead of going by himself his crew mates ate the Lotus, “but those who ate this honeyed plant, the Lotus, never cared to report, nor to return: they longed to stay forever, browsing on that native bloom, forgetful of their homeland” (Homer 205-210), and that is why Odysseus is at fault for the three of them who forgot their homeland and main purpose, which is another reason why he is not a hero.
