To be unique means to be oneself and express one’s differences and individuality. Simply imagine a word without differences: everyone has the same beliefs, the same thoughts, the same life. Ayn Rand, the author of Anthem, has included sameness throughout her book, no one has their own talents. In addition to this, “Harrison Bergeron” by Kurt Vonnegut Jr., wrote the characters with a sense of unity. Uniqueness is not common in these stories, however both include similar characters that contain similar themes throughout reading.…

The reader of my essay is probably going to groan and ask themselves, “How is being adopted different?” For me being adopted is unique because I am able to embrace both my American and Russian Culture. My first memory of realizing I was “unique” was when I was in third grade. My teammates and I were watching a hockey game in Lake Placid, not in 1980 though.…

So, recently I read Deborah Tannen's 1994 essay "The Triumph of the Yell", in which she laments the deterioration of modern-day debate due to its over-combative nature. She argues that framing debates as a fight between opposing extremes obstructs the truth rather than bringing it to light. While I was reading it, I couldn't help but think of the anime fan community (as well as the gaming community, and the sad state of U.S. politics) and the "debates" that take place within it. Far too often, they turn into unintelligible battles of ad hominem attacks and self-serving logic, rather than anything of real substance. Much of this boils down to the idea that anyone who doesn't agree with you is either a "fanboy" or "elitist".…

Ethic I normally don 't admit this, but I like to argue. Usually I can keep my thoughts to myself, but lately I have been getting frustrated with people because they always agree with each other even though evidence or proof is lacking. Things that are said are accepted, and no good discussions occur. That is when I begin to play the devil 's advocate even if I know that the majority is correct. For example, I know that people should be stewards of the earth; in fact, most people I know also agree with me on that issue.…

There was a situation where I had chosen to advocate for women, especially women of color. A few years ago there was a law that was passed on abortion rights in Arkansas. It shortened the amount of weeks a mother could decide to proceed with an abortion. Many of my coworkers, who were women, were surprisingly not against this new law. It was difficult to explain how this one law could have adverse effects for women of color.…

Now to Win Friends and InfEuence People took its place in publishing history as one of the all-time international best-sellers. It touched a nerve and filled a human need that was more than a faddish phenomenon of post-Depression days, as evidenced by its continued and uninterrupted sales into the eighties, almost half a century later.
