According to a former New York State Teacher of The Year, based on a child’s performance, they are placed into one of the following categories: “gifted and talented honors;” “gifted and talented;” “special progress;” “mainstream;” and “special ed.” Students are placed into these categories because it is difficult to monitor individual students and the categoriza-tions are simply more convenient for the system. These categories are immensely degrading and what they do is prove the imbalance of equality within the schooling system. All individuals are not treated as one, they are treated based on what category their “social machine merits—and not one step further” (xix). Once placed into these categories it’s very hard to excel and go to a higher level but not nearly as hard to drop down a level or maybe two. The harder it is for a child to memorize the content, the more convenient it is for the school to just slap the label “special-ed” on them; schools love these students because they receive more money to “educate” them. These categories prove how the lack of versatility is a major issue within the education system. The standardization of learning is essentially what is boring the children of today. “The solution, according to Robinson, is to abandon the paradigm of the school as a factory: “The fact is that given the challenges we face, educa- tion doesn 't need to be reformed – it needs to be transformed. …show more content…
Similar to adults, children have a job and that job is to go to school. Education should not be treated as a job, but as a career. Jobs are occupations where individuals solely look forward to the paycheck at the end of the week, lacking any enthusiasm to perform their daily tasks; if they had a choice they would not be there. While careers are occupations that an individual chose and has much interest to them. A possible way to cure boredom of students, is to break out of the rigorous routine. Structure within schools is a necessity and children need structure to function in society but the system should still incorporate some creative aspects to keep students engaged. Provide just enough structure so the students can function under order, but not so much that it will cause them to start operating like robots. The current system of schooling creates bored children who who don 't in-fact hate education, but actually hate schooling. Unfortunately, the schooling system is boring, but there are several solutions to this issue. Students find the curriculum in school boring because they know what to expect. If the curriculum wasn 't so predicable and it promoted spontaneity students would become more willingly engaged. Omitting the memorization factor of the testing process and asking analytical questions that promote critical thinking is necessary
