What Makes An Effective Leader

What actions define a leader and what attributes contribute to a person’s character that makes him worthy the title “Leader”? These are imperative questions that come to mind when I think of the qualities that an individual should possess to earn this appellation. In this short essay, I will describe some of the qualities that I believe are important to become an effective leader. I will illustrate some of the ways I have exercised these virtues throughout my life and how they have not only transformed the way I lead, but the way I carry myself. As a prior Sergeant in The United States Army, there are certain values and principles that we exhibit. A well-known list of ethics known as the Army values is essential to the way we lead our subordinates and treat peers alike. The acronym LDRSHIP, which stands for Loyalty, Duty, Respect, Selfless-service, Honor, Integrity, and Personal Courage are the main core of the way we approach individuals and life situations. Out of all these values there are two that show the true character of a leader in my perspective, these are Integrity and Respect, nevertheless remembering the other values. …show more content…
Growing up it was instilled in me to believe that respect is earned, and to treat others as you would like to be treated. Being a leader doesn’t mean abusing the privileges that you have been bestowed with but using them to uplift others and help them mature in every way, consequently validating the real definition of a leader. Integrity is a trait that defines the character of a leader even when there is no award or accolade to be obtained. It is making choices that are morally and legally correct, even when there is no one around. I believe is the stepping stone to build relationships and to earn the trust and respect of
