Sisasitter: A Short Story

Improved Essays
What is a “Sissysitter?”I fill the qualifications in full for many peoples assumptions of their perfect man. I am big, white, and dumb and I milk that for every single thing I can. To many I’m just a thing and I take the good with the bad and I also do not believe that negative publicity is a ‘thing.’ Good or bad, the list of ‘things’ that I believe actually exist gets smaller everyday. For example, when people ask what it is that I do I say “I’m a teacher and I bounce.” I always assumed that people asked to be polite and I would keep it short and to the point because I have good manners. Then one day a friend asked a question, out of the blue that made me uncomfortable and I got pissed that he even had the nerve to bring it up. He is small, …show more content…
I think I’d rather be beat up…all the time”He had a point I don’t like hurting people’s feeling but I’m an artist and require full artistic license without influence from outside sources. So I simply nodded.“You do anything but bounce…and it clearly isn’t worthy of the same obscure reference I’m sure the men of seal team 6 give when asked what they do. Plus, you aren’t even committed to it…you only do it part time.”“You also tell me people think it is such a big difference in jobs. You say they are almost exactly the same because you never get a chance to sit down because there is so much to do. You make it sound like you are babysitting victims all day. like a sitter for other people’s children, and some sissies. What you are is a ‘Sissysitter.”I didn’t have an answer…it was nice to have that noticed by others and the fact that they notice this big, dumb white guy tries but there can be something even more that I can do with these opportunities to be helpful so that other people know that they matter.Thank sweet baby Jesus I had this conversation with my short straight hobbit friend before one of my big scary black friends filled me in on the fact I was a

“You’re just a white girl trapped inside a black body,” were words I heard repeatedly as a child. For the longest time I considered those words a compliment. As an African American girl native to the Congo, I was naïve enough to think this statement meant how fully immersed with American culture my appearance, language, and every aspect of my personality was becoming. To me, those words held acceptance from my American friends and families—the only imaginable thing any foreign child yearns for. It hadn’t occurred to me that underneath that statement hid a message very twisted that would follow me for the next 12 years of my life.…

After reading the story “The myth of the Latin Woman”, I was not surprised that people still to this day carry the mindset of racial stereotyping. Even though that no matter how much a person tries to avoid being prejudged and cast away from their culture, they would still be judged from what people see portrayed in the media. However even until this day, I am and will forever be a victim of being labeled due to the color of my skin in this society. I myself as well as others in society am guilty of stereotyping Latino women due to what we see in the mass media. There was a time where I came across a Latino female, it was when I was hanging out with a group of friends, she walked past…

Black Men vs White Men and the Police After reading wide range of articles in which police officers and the media are differently treating African American men, the implication of this situation calls for a subtle question that appears to either set tempers ablaze or even engender vacuums of silence in a room. African American men are dealt with differently in contrast to Caucasian men. Why is the treatment different? Is the law protecting only one part of Americans and surprisingly, not the other?…

She gives three common assumptions people have about the gap: women are paid less for the same amount of work, women are disheartened to aim for higher-paying occupations, and gender discrimination hinders women in all fields. Then, she goes on to argue that the so-called existence of the gap is based on inaccurate information because it puts together men and women working in the same profession, but working different amount of hours. Also, she notes that women tend to go into careers that help people, such as nursing or teaching, while men go for more rigorous, physical work, like engineering or construction. She justifies her argument even more by saying that men take up higher positions because they do not care for leisure time nor strive to work for fewer hours. Unlike women, who typically like to have flexible hours in case of emergency matters and personal time that has no relation to work.…

In this essay, I’d like to talk about my experiences of being a half Greek and half Puerto Rican girl growing up in a hispanic neighborhood. Sure, I can discuss being a woman or how greatly my race and Greek culture have influenced my life, but I chose to write about the racial discrimination and prejudices I experienced in this specific area of my life because experiences like mine do not get recognized and are hardly ever talked about. They should. I chose this topic because I never get to voice what my experiences were like. The times I had voiced them, they were met with eye rolls from people who thought I was lying and labeled my experiences as fiction.…
