What Makes A Sacrifice For The Republic Men?

Making sacrifices can be hard, everyone has had firsthand experience with making adjustments to their lives in order to reach their goals. “Great achievement is usually born of great sacrifice, and is never the result of selfishness.” – Napoleon Hill. Making adjustments often means giving up the things that you enjoyed doing the most, which is part of everyday life. For the men in 1832, it was no different for them if it meant sacrificing themselves for the better of their people. In the book, Les Miserables by Victor Hugo, the men in the barricade portrayed the Republic men who lost their lives on the day that is known as the June Rebellion/Paris Uprising of 1832. Even though the rebels seemed to throw away their lives senselessly to continue the legacy of the French Revolution, they started a slight domino effect. In the novel, the rebels had disrupted the funeral by causing a riot which would evidently cause a fight between the French army and the Republic. “There was assault after assault. The horror continued to increase.” – (Hugo 314-315) In the barricade, where they would meet up eventually, they describe how horrible it was for them against the French army.
