Career Essay: The Practice Of Law

When I think about people or professions I do not have to look very far. All of my life I have been surrounded by the people closest to me, that I love and respect, who share the same passion or the practice of law. I would say that law is our families business. In conducting research about the career or as I have been told by my grandfather, mother, and dad: the “profession” that I am interested in is the law. I am drawn to the law, but because of some of my learning difficulties, I have never had courage to pursue this course. The field of law is a very diverse and complex profession. Civil attorneys can be broken down into those that go to court and litigate cases and those who do no litigate, but rather practice strictly transactional work. Criminal attorneys, for the most part, must go to court to either prosecute criminals or defend criminals. Those attorneys that practice civil litigation will spend parts of their day in their office and parts of the day going to court. Civil attorneys that do not practice litigation generally spend their day seeing clients in their office and doing the bulk of their work in their office. The first skill is the analytical skill. That means, “Lawyers must be able to analyze large amounts of information, determine relevant facts, and propose viable solutions (collegegrad.com).” The second skill is the interpersonal skill, “which means the lawyers must build a trusting relationship with their clients and they must win the respect and trust of their clients, so that clients feel comfortable and share personal information related to their case. The third skill is the problem solving skill, this skill is important for lawyer because good problem solving skills will help to prepare the best defense and recommendation (collegegrad.com).” The next three skills I think are the most important in being a successful lawyer. The three skills are research, speaking, and writing.
