As much as I enjoyed playing basketball, practices were never laidback. Waking up at four in the morning everyday was not something I was a fan of. Our coach used to say: “Discipline is what separates a good team from a bad one”. This helped me get through a lot, not only on the court, but off the court as well. I learned to do everything with a routine. I learned that there are sometimes where we can have fun, and sometimes when we just need to take things seriously. I had a responsibility as team captain of being there for my team. So one day, I got up at four in the morning and showed up at practice. I could not participate, but I sat in the sideline and cheered on my teammates. From that day on, I attended every practice and every game. Not being able to play basketball allowed me to appreciate everything I have because I understood how easily it can be taken away from me. It also allowed me to focus on many different aspects of my life and become a well rounded student. While I couldn’t play basketball, I began getting involved with different clubs in my school, I resumed playing the piano and the flute, I became involved in several community service events, and focused a lot more on my academics.
