When talking about leadership, there are always key characteristics that come to my mind that are often required of a good leader. Usually this person should be smart, enthusiastic, good at communicating, bold and confident. Parker Palmer speaks of a different characteristic that is needed that is usually not on people 's requirement list. That is the idea of leading with light. Palmer first explains in his book, Let Your Life Speak, that most people have shadows in themselves. Things inside themselves that are holding them back, things that are causing a “darkness” in their life and will continue to cause that darkness until they face it and work through it. These shadows, if not dealt with, continually discourage us and cause even more weakness and darkness to be over us. As a result, we also unintentionally tend to cast those shadows over others that we are leading. Palmer suggests, “If we do not understand that the enemy is within, we will find a thousand ways of making someone ‘out there’ into the enemy, becoming leaders who oppress rather than liberating others”(Palmer 80). This is something that is very evident in our world today when we hear about people being discouraged by their leaders and not respecting their leaders well because of the way they are being treated by those people that are in power over them.

This is not how leaders should be, but when we meet our shadows face to face and work through them we are defeating those shadows and they can be replaced with light! This light is encouragement and strength that came from overcoming our personal weaknesses that were holding us hostage by our own

Insert title here “Leadership by deception isn't leadership. It's fraud” a quote by Dashanne Stokes. Even though parties running to be elected often proclaim they can make a difference in a country, when they actually win their promises are often not followed through. This is because, despite humanity's best efforts, when placed in a position of power even those with the purest intentions succumb to unethical practices as seen in Matched by Ally Condie and The Circle by Dave Eggers. Such unethical practices consist of their obsessive need to control others and their reaction when control cannot be obtained, how they will endanger others for their own personal gain, and how they abuse the power given to them.…

The specific qualities of a leader have always been in question in determining if an individual has the characteristics of a great leader. From the early 1840’s with the Great Man Theory to today with Charismatic Theory, leadership styles are constantly being analyzed and formulated to fit in the current context of leadership. Merriam – Webster describes leadership as the power or ability to lead other people in a group, organization, or situation (Leadership, 2015, p.1). An interesting thought about a leadership is that if a sample population is asked what are the characteristics of a great leader there would be a variety of answers because each individual has their own formulated idea about how a great leader should act and conduct tasks. Leadership has a drastic transformation when you analysis different fields and careers of leaders.…

A leader, the person who leads or commands a group. That's the Merriam-Webster definition, but that seems far too simple a definition for a character who's actions and influences can reverberate for days, weeks or even generations to come. Often the word leader calls to mind a vision of Martin Luther King Jr., a military officer, or the President of the United States? A leader, in my opinion, is someone who leads a group with integrity, and with a passion to serve others. Leaders need to have values and character straits admirable to others.…

Some people think leaders are born with a trait that innately makes them leaders, while others theorize that it is a characteristic of an individual, but we have learned that leaders are a product of their development and life experiences. Leaders are concerned with understanding people’s beliefs and gaining their commitment. They function without focusing on the opinions of others, which allows them to think of new ideas and motivate others to develop these…
