1. What made me the leader I am today? The comfort zone is “a psychological state in which a person fells familiar, at ease, in control, and experiences low anxiety. A person in this state uses a limited set of behaviors to deliver a steady level of performance, usually without a sense of risk.” Years ago, as a young second class petty officer, my chief was counseling me on my marks when he said “you may notice that your marks are a little lower than PO Jomps that is because he is a flight engineer and can run engines and do other things that you can’t.” Chief then challenged me to attend the next flight engineer school. I did not want to be a flight engineer it was outside of my comfort zone however, because of the way he asked me, I could not refuse and immediately accepted. Chief DeBiase’s challenge pushed me outside of my comfort zone; to grow leaders have to get used to being outside of our comfort zone.
2. Definition of leadership! My favorite quote on leadership, one I use on my words of wisdom sheets is Colin Powell’s “Leadership is solving problems and the day soldiers stop bringing you their problems is the day you have stopped leading them. The second leadership behavior that I want to focus on is from an essay question response: “integrate more closely with the crew. Get to know those you lead and be more accessible to them.” MCPOCG Cantrell has challenged all chiefs to get away from their desks, get out and interact with the crew. In my experience few people want to visit the Command Master Chiefs (CMC) office. In the past many of the people that have visited have waited until their problems were serious. It seems that people are more willing to talk to me if I am in their space. I already make it a habit to go on “walkabout” but I am going to commit to spending four hours a week walking about and talking with the crew in their work
