To be persecuted doesn’t only mean to kill you could be persecuted many other ways like (1) Verbal Mockery, (2) Public Shaming, (3) Discrimination, (4) Shunning, (5) Loss of property, (6) Imprisonment, (7) Loss of Basic Human Rights, (8) Physical Beatings,
What this means for us is that those who defend and stand up for Jesus and his teachings and their faith, regardless of the consequences, will be blessed and belong to the kingdom of heaven.

This is a perfect example to show how they got persecuted for standing up for their faith in Jesus and knowing that their reward in in heaven not on earth.
Bad Example
The difference between a bad example and a good example for persecution is that the good example had examples that showed their reward in heaven and that it was their choice out of freedom to do help someone or follow Jesus.
Unfortunately a Bad example would be when they people are persecuted for money or by force or because they have to do it to survive.
