What It Means To Be A Disciple Analysis

Tzitzit Matthew 5 the people who are great in his kingdom are those that follow the commandments.

I practice torah because I am a student of the messiah and that's what he did.

What does it mean to be a disciple? According to Dictionary.com, a disciple is:

a person who is a pupil or an adherent of the doctrines of another; follower

So... when someone claims to be a disciple of Jesus, what are they actually saying? In essence, they are saying:

I am a person who is a pupil or an adherent of the doctrines of Jesus; a follower of Jesus.

Does that mean that we spend our time learning about Jesus? Talking about Jesus? Retelling the parables he told? Telling of the things he did? Sharing our faith story? Trying to help others come to faith?

Those are all things we should be doing, for sure. But is it being a disciple? Not really.

In Matthew 28, Jesus gave us his definition of a disciple as part of, what is commonly referred to as, the Great Commission:

Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe all that I have commanded you.

Most of the teachings I've heard on this passage over the years treat this passage as if Jesus was only telling the remaining eleven of his original Disciples what they should do. When we look at the structure of the sentence (you may not have noticed that this is one complete sentence), Jesus tells them not only what they should do; he also tells them how to do it.

He tells them to make disciples of all nations by baptizing them and teaching them to observe all that he had commanded.

Don't believe me? Lets try using this exact sentence structure with a couple different set of instructions and see how it works:

Go and make a loaf of fresh bread, sift the flour, and prepare it as I have commanded

This is what Roberts calls the Proclaimed Kingdom, for Acts 1:4, 8, says, “But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you, and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the end of the earth.” Jesus commands them to spread his word, to tell all nations about the good news of salvation. It is a ministry of reconciliation. People who have reconciled with God are able to help others to be reconciled with him so that they may have a personal relationship with God through sincere repentance and faith in God (p.61). In short, discipleship is an encounter with God making Christianity a personal relationship with him. Paul writes in 2 Corinthians 5:17-18, "Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, the new creation has come: The old has gone, the new is here! All this is from God, who reconciled us to himself through Christ and gave us the ministry of reconciliation".…

We must nurture new disciples, as seen in Matthew 28:19-20. It is important to teach these individuals of why and how to relate the Bible as the revelation of God in matters of life, salvation, kingdom work and theology. This is vital to the new believers, because they must learn how they view God and his response to their lives; as well as to their response to the world. Through discipleship believers learn how to communicate God’s love to those who are lost and without love. They also learn how to convey God’s incarnational love to…

What role of the OT Law should be in the life of the Church? There are six hundred and thirteen laws Mosaic Laws and many Christians today find themselves wondering which of the Mosaic Laws are to be followed and which ones are to be considered obsolete. According to Matthew 5:17, more importantly according to Jesus, the Laws have been fulfilled; "Do not think that I have come to abolish the Law or the Prophets; I have not come to abolish them but to fulfill them." 1 I found it stated in the following way;…

Last week, in the Gospel reading, Jesus was baptized by John and a voice from heaven, the voice of God, declared that Jesus was "my Son, the Beloved''. After this act of commitment and affirmation Jesus was driven by the Spirit into the wilderness to work out the implications of his revealed identity and how to live out that identity in accordance with God’s will. Jesus deals with each of the temptations in turn and holds steadfastly to his commitment to do things God's way and not his own.…

This commandment of Jesus is important because it is a personal order for Christians to have a deep faith in Jesus Christ as indicated in verse 18. “All power is given unto me in heaven and on earth.” This is an incredibly powerful statement, which demands faith in Jesus Christ, validating His power in the lives of Christians and their commitment to Him. This verse acts as a clear affirmation of the omnipotence of Christ, and therefore, His deity. If Christians do not believe this statement, there is no complete faith.…

Starting off this class with reading what Family Ministry is defined as opened up my view on how Family Ministry can be diverse in a variety of understanding. Diana Garland stated that “family ministry is any activity that directly or indirectly (1) forms families in the congregation community; (2) increases the Christlikeness of the family relationships of Christians; or (3) equips and supports families for the work to which they are called together.” Earlier in the reading she stated that “The flurry of programs called family ministry is the fear that Christian families are falling apart and need churches to strengthen and support them.” Diana Garland’s definition is what I strive for in ministry and I believe that she also is aware…
