What is Zika, and why do we have to be worried. Zika was first discovered in 1947 first identified in Rhesus monkeys. The Zika virus was named after the Zika forest in Uganda. The first human case was detected in 1952. Prior to 2007 only a handful of cases were documented. In 2015 Brazil confirmed its first case of the infection. Zika is a mosquito born disease; it is spread by the bite of an aedes aegypti infected mosquito. Only 20% of the people bitten display any symptoms. From 2015 it spread from Africa, to Latin America, the US and Europe. The main problem with Zika is that it causes birth defects such as microcephany that is when babies are born with abnormally small heads. An expert who looked at the brain scans of infants with this condition whose mothers had Zika said the babies could not be expected to live very long, and might never be able to recognize their parents. “The World Health Organization (WHO) has said there is strong scientific consensus that Zika can also cause Guillain-Barre, a rare neurological syndrome that causes temporary paralysis in adults.” (Allen, 6). Italian doctors have reported detecting the virus in the sperm of a man six months after he showed symptoms of Zika, pointing to a lengthening of the period of possible sexual transmission.
