In the complex world that we live in, everything has a why. Simon Sinek dives into the question of finding that why within a deeper context in his book “What is your Why?” This book report will highlight the main points that Sinek discusses within his book and how they may be applicable to my future in business as well as to our class this semester.
Sinek makes several impactful points within the first few chapters of his book. The first thing that I found applicable was his idea of human behavior. He discusses that there are two ways to influence human behavior, you can either manipulate it or inspire it. There are many forms of manipulation ranging from price to peer pressure but these tactics …show more content…
The golden circle is a simple concept and I have included a picture of the golden circle at the end of this report. The circle starts with a small circle which makes up the center of the diagram labeled the “Why” circle. That circle is surrounded by two larger circled labeled “How” and “What.” Sinek discusses that the outer circle or the “What” circle is supposed to represent that everyone knows what the company as a whole does. The medium sized circle or the “How” circle represents how the company is different and how they do what they do. The smallest circle or the “Why” circle represents the very few people that clearly realize why they do what they do. Sinek then discusses that most companies operate from the outside in and fail to realize that it is actually more beneficial to start from the inside and work out because that is where the company culture and values are rooted, similar to how our SHRM class is set up. Sinek used the example of the company Apple to get a better realization of his golden circle theory. He discusses how normal computer companies promote that they make good computers that are designed well and then simply try to sell them to consumers. What apple does is work from the “why” out to the “what.” Apple believes in things such as challenging the status quo and create a strong brand for their company so that the consumer feel connected with the company. The quote that stuck out to me from this concept was that “people don’t buy what you do, they buy why you do it.” This quote encapsulates the entire theory of the golden circle. Instead of focusing on what you do, focus on why you do it because that is what connects with consumers and creates a positive working
