What Is Wrong In The Crucible

In the play The Crucible by Arthur Miller, the people of Salem are accusing others of witchcraft. During the play several people were realizing that what was happening was not right, some did speak out but many did nothing to try and stop it. There are also many times in the real world this has occurred. An example of a person doing what is right when others wouldn't is when Rosa Parks refused to give up her seat for a white man.
Up until 1964, black people's rights were neglected, until a few acts of bravery put the Civil Rights Movement in motion. One of those which happened on December 1, 1955, was when Rosa Parks would not give up her seat at the front of the bus to a white man. Rosa Parks was on of the first to do what was right when others did not. Similarly to what happened in The Crucible, people stayed quiet during the early 1900s because of the fear of what would

One of those being John Proctor, he spoke out against the court when many would not, even when they knew what was happening was wrong. “...you know in all your black hearts this be fraud” (Miller 1315). John says this in the court because the judges will not believe what he is saying and only believes the girls who are making it up. Another time John speaks out against Abby is in act 3. “Lies, lies.” (Miller 1312). John says this because Abby and the others are pretending that Mary has sent her spirit onto the girls. The girls do this so the judges will think Mary is a witch and not believe what she says about the girls. John Proctor and Rosa Parks are similar in the fact that they both were brave enough to stand up for what was right and challenging authority. A difference between them would be that Rosa Parks’ actions helped spark a movement, John Proctor’s attempts were not as successful resulting in him getting

In The Crucible, Danforth states that the people have nothing to be afraid of if they are not guilty because, he wants to change the attention from the need to execute guiltless people for the greater good in a battle versus evil. This is shown when Francis Nurse goes to Danforth presenting a signed contract of 91 neighbors and friends that signed it to prove that Martha Corey, Goody Proctor, and Rebecca Nurse are all Christian, honorable women. In response to Francis, Danforth states that all ninety-one people must be questioned in court separately, and claims that Francis has brought evil upon these people by saying, “No, old man, you have not hurt these people if they are of good conscience. But you must understand, sir, that a person is…

The Crucible by Arthur Miller, was a tragic event During 1692 in Salem, Massachusetts a 17-year-old girl whose name was Abigail Williams, caused several tragic deaths to protect herself from punishment. Throughout The Crucible she accused innocent people of being witches, and if they didn’t admit that they had been involved in witchcraft, they were hung. For being silent and not lying, a sin in the highly Christian society, people were hanged. Abigail is the most to blame because she knows that the girls were just faking to avoid getting in trouble, and manipulates them to accuse people anyway, knowing that the accused would either die or admit to a crime they didn’t commit and lose all respect in the community. She also goes out of her way to get rid of Elizabeth Proctor.…

Because of the events that happened in Salem John is most to…

Dale Carnegie once said that “most of the important things in the world have been accomplished by people who have kept on trying when there seemed to be no hope at all.” In other words, those who continue to persist despite difficulty for what is right will achieve the most satisfaction and gain the greatest reward in life. This is apparent through watching Ingrid Visser fight for killer whales and by observing certain characters in The Crucible by Arthur Miller. In both examples, it is suggested that when a wrong is being committed by those in power, it is necessary to challenge the beliefs of those individuals in order to protect the rest of society.…

The actual events on which The Crucible was based upon started when Abigail Williams and Elizabeth “Betty” Parris experienced violent and strange fits in 1692 in the town of Salem, Massachusetts. According to more recent scientific studies, the cause of these unholy symptoms were most likely caused by the fungus ergot. Due to the widespread worship of Puritanism at the time, this behavior was thought to be caused by devilish witchcraft. Tituba, Reverend Samuel Parris’s slave, was accused of bewitching the girls. The two girls also claimed that Sarah Good and Sarah Osborn were involved.…

Hysteria in The Crucible Hysteria is a prominent theme In The Crucible, by Arthur Miller. Hysteria is the underlying cause for everything that happens in the play; it is what moves the story along and urges the reader to think critically about the character’s actions and choices or rather their lack of critical thinking and choice. While there are many factors that potentially contributed to the hysteria in Salem, what is depicted in The Crucible is something man-made and perpetuated through the choices and actions of specific characters. The Crucible makes the point that hysteria and mob behavior is contagious, and uses witchery as a means of conveying this message.…
