What Is Workplace Violence?

Improved Essays
Workplace violence affects a myriad of healthcare professionals. From a political vantage point it is important for nursing organizations to collaborate with other members of healthcare organizations to push for legislation to make violence towards healthcare workers a crime. Existing legislation and public policy addressing the multifaceted issue is limited and currently no federal criterion mandates workplace violence protection. Since June 2012 thirty states have passed acts which consider violence towards healthcare workers a misdemeanor or felony, however twenty other states have no laws to protect health care workers (Wolf et al., 2014).

Introduction: Horizontal violence has become a way too familiar in the nursing profession (Weinand, M. R. (2010). Approximately 80% of nurses stated being bullied and around 75% have been harassed or been the victims of aggressive and intimidating behaviours during their careers (Hader, 2008; Hutchinson, Wilkes, Jackson, & Vickers, 2010). “Behaviors that often accompany lateral violence continue to be a current problem in the literature for over 20 years” (Embree, 2010). As described in literature, “the origin of LV refers to a phenomenon known as relational aggression which can be defined as any behavior that is anticipated to hurt an individual by damaging or manipulating relationships with other individuals” (Simmons, 2003). Actions related to relational aggression are most often driven to overtly isolate the targeted individual while also increasing the social rank of the oppressor. Current research shows that the average percentage of voluntary nurse turnover in general is 8.4% and for first year nurses this average increases to 27.1% (Stanley, 2007). The financial side of lateral…

Surveys were also put into place to determine the occurrences of horizontal violence. The study concluded that the majority of respondents reported their organizations did not have a formal Horizontal Violence policy (61%). Almost one-third of RNs (29%) perceived that in those organizations with Horizontal Violence policies, the policy was not enforced. According to the US Bureau of Labor Statistics, the rate of assault in the hospital industry in 2010 was 8.0 per 10,000 full-time-workers, three times the rate (2.4 per 10,000 full-time-workers) for all private sector industries (Rodriguez, Myers, Richardson, & Lipscomb, 2010, para. 1). Taking into consideration that these are that of reported incidents, it leaves a margin of unreported incidences to speculate about. The Bureau of Labor Statistics shows that magnitude of the issue and how it is not declining, but rapidly increasing. With the shortage of nurses, one can only consider if physical assaults contribute to the rapid turnover of nurses. Assault is defined within the Merriam-Webster’s dictionary as, “An assault is carried out by a threat of bodily harm coupled with an apparent, present ability to cause the harm’ (2011,pg 323).…

The Department of Labor website is a wealth of knowledge about US employment. After reviewing the weekly unemployment claims report I was impressed that overall job loss during the week of 2/11/17 (determined by the number of initial claims) was 4.8% lower than the same week last year and the number of active beneficiaries dropped substantially as well by 7.1% during the preceding year (1/28/2017 – 1/28/2016) (US DOL, n.d.). Most of the unemployed are 16-24 years-of-age, with a higher percentage being males (US DOL, n.d.). In July 2016, there were 20.5 million employed 16 - 24-year-olds and 2.6 million unemployed which remains consistent with last year’s numbers, thus it appears those 25 and older must be finding jobs (US DOL, n.d.).…

During these types of violence the motive is usually theft, and the criminal during most of these incidents is carrying a gun or other weapon which would increase the likelihood that the victim will be killed or seriously wounded. This type of violence falls heavily on specific service industries whose jobs make them vulnerable i.e. taxi drivers, late-night retail or gas station clerks, and others who are on duty at night, primarily those people who work in isolated locations or dangerous neighborhoods, and who carry or have access to cash. However, most jobs today do not involve these types of scenarios. To get a better understanding of some of the factors that lead up to a case of workplace violence, one must have a grasp of highly publicized incidents that have occurred in the…
