In a totalitarian society where love, compassion, and intimacy are not permitted- two people manage to find each other. In George Orwell’s novel 1984, Winston and Julia are an unlikely match who would likely be incompatible in a normal, “free”society. While they are united in their passionate hatred for their society’s government (known as “the party”), they are complete opposites in their vision to overthrow or rebellion of it. Winston has a different view on the party than other people, he works at the Ministry of Truth so he knows exactly what happened in the past before history gets rewritten.…

In the novel 1984 by George Orwell, one man by the name of Winston is caught in what seems to be a human drive to escape the power of Big Bother as he wonders why the government works behind closed doors and separates in different ministries such as the ministry of love, peace, plenty, and truth. His mentality is that people need to know what is going on outside of Oceania, and that history is not controlled by superiors in the government, but through its original author. The normal theory of civil-military relations contends that politicians should declare a military operation’s objective and then step aside leaving the business of war to the military. In his book, “Supreme Command,” Eliot Cohen deviates from this normalcy theory by arguing that active statesmen make the best wartime leaders, pushing their military subordinates to succeed where they might have failed if left on their own. According to Cohen civilian intervention at both strategic and operational levels was essential for military success. While Cohen’s account of civil-military relations in both Winston Churchill and Abraham Lincoln supports his general argument of supreme command, I find Churchill’s case more supportive based on the way he…

Despite the situation, he acted decisively, both to continue Roosevelt’s work to end the war and to make the presidency his own. Under his command, the U.S. dropped two atomic bombs, the first to be used in warfare, on Hiroshima and Nagasaki, Japan, effectively ending the war (History 1).…

There is no doubt that with all of Winston Churchill’s many accomplishments (as I will mention later) he was a pretty amazing person, but as you might not know it didn’t always necessarily start out that way. For example when he was little he was often lonely and felt that he was often ignored by his parents. Lady Randolph Churchill (Jennie Churchill) and Lord Randolph Henry Spencer-Churchill, (Winston’s parents) had a very busy lifestyle, his father was very active in his job as a politician/ statesman, and his mother had an extravagant social life and often went to parties. Later Winston stated that he loved his parents but it sometimes felt that they were “Loved from a difference”. This left Churchill with his brother John (or Jack as he…

Churchill objectively speaks of how the French were defeated, England is next to be bombed, the Nazi’s have gained a lot of territory, and the casualties of war. He does all of this in such a way what that he seems to have an attitude that things are grim and fearful. He then seems to twist his own attitude later on by giving hope to the situation and describing what can be done. He goes from a despairing attitude to one of patriotism and hope. This can be seen most prominently in the selection, “Let us therefore brace ourselves to our duties, and so bear ourselves that, if the British Empire and its Commonwealth last for a thousand years, men will still say, “This was their finest hour.””…
