What is video gaming culture? Is it a culture in the first place? Can a gaming world be defined as a culture? Yes, most certainly it can be. Who or what is this culture about? One can only imagine what this culture entails. Then again, there are “1.2 billion people that play video games” (Diele). Who are these people, and what defines a gaming culture? These questions are only the tip of the iceberg on what I am going to explore in the world of online gaming and video games as themselves. Video games and virtual worlds are no longer a thing of the past. They have transformed into mainstream culture and have become a culture in and of themselves. Videos games are expanding into a new world and cultural outlook on life. Within these online worlds are, many different aspects that pull people from all walks of life into this online culture. All genders and ages are gaming nowadays. There is not one age group or gender that has a standout percentage when it comes to who is gaming, as defined in the Diele report. The report even pulls a stat that compares women to men in terms of who is gaming online, and the number s are about the same “46% women to 54% men” (Diele). Most of us at some time in our life have participated in some kind of online game. For instance, if someone is playing a game on a smartphone that counts as being a participant within the online gaming community.
