In the novel 1984 by George Orwell, Winston recognizes that even if you speak about something or someone negatively, it still spreads their influence. Before the scheduled event called Two Minutes of Hate, Winston explains the life of Emmanuel Goldstein. Goldstein was once a leading figure of the Party, who then attempted to overthrow it. During the scheduled Two Minutes of Hate, Winston expressed his concern, “that although Goldstein was hated and despised by everybody, although every day, and a thousand times a day, on platforms, on the telescreens, in newspapers, in books, his theories were refuted, smashed, ridiculed, held up to the general gaze for the pitiful rubbish that they were- in spite of all this, his influence never …show more content…
He is a clerk in the records department, specifically he was in charge of rectifying news items from the past to make them connect to the present. He made sure that anyone who displeased the Party was never mentioned in past articles or speeches, so it made it seem as if those people never existed. The Party made people disappear from the world and they also erased all records of them, so nobody could prove that they ever existed. Winston experiences this for the first time when he receives a note from the dark hair who worked in the Fiction Department. The note simply stated, “I love you.”, but just that phrase changed Winston’s whole life at that moment. And Winston realizes this himself when he felt the, “desire to stay alive had welled up in him, and the taking of minor risks suddenly seemed stupid.” Before he had garnered the love note from this mysterious girl, Winston didn’t care if the Thought Police caught him for his diary or his strange adventure down in the Proles’ territory. But now it 's as if Winston feels the need to be strong and secure for this girl, and if he keeps taking chances with the Party he won’t be able to bestow that to her. People always feel the need to protect their loved ones and that has not changed for centuries; seeing as George Orwell wrote a similar experience decades ago. It is almost like people don’t want to feel guilty for not protecting their loved ones. Like Winston’s new relationship with the dark-haired girl, people in strong and loving relationships feel the urge to do everything in their power to save and shield their significant other. Today people still think of their loved ones as a reason to live and they stop assisting that chance of death by minimizing the risks they
