The painting that goes by the title "What is Truth (Christ and Pilate)" was developed by Nikolai Ge. Nikolai Ge as a religious person who developed paintings based on religious themes. This painting was based on the temptations of Jesus where Christ is perceived as the new hero. Peredvizhniki paintings used Christ as a representation of the solution to the political troubles that were experienced in the 1870s. In the 1880s, Nikolai developed the painting that reflected on the images of Jesus and his experiences. The image “What is Truth (Christ and Pilate)” displayed the exhibition of the pressure of politics from the church. Ge had a religious feeling that criticized the political leaders and ended up offending some (Valkenier).
