What we don’t realize is that Tom Buchanan has a dark side. He is currently having an affair with a lonely shop owner’s wife. Myrtle Wilson is not all that smart; if she were, she would have seen right through Tom’s good physique and perfect jaw line. She, like Gatsby, is trying to better her life by striving for the fame and fortune. She ultimately goes for Tom because he can provide for her better than her own husband can. Alas, Tom has a not-so-private secret. He’s married. This little factor of his life makes the reader realize he is scum. When Nick and Jordan Baker, a famous golf player, came for dinner, Myrtle decides to phone in the middle of the feast. Tom had answered the phone anyway and he tells Myrtle not to call that number again. This shows that Tom wants to keep his adulterer life far away from his married life. Tom likes to control things, and if he doesn’t have control, he loses his temper. You see this happen when he and Nick go to New York to have a day with Myrtle and her sister. “They’re talking with Mr. Gatsby.” She said back. I was confused. The only Gatsby I had ever heard about was in my senior year College Writing class. Maybe it was just some coincidence and there was no real Jay Gatsby. “Don’t go up there. Wait for them here.” She muttered before she ran off to some other room to play and cause a ruckus.
I was intrigued now. Who was this Mr. Gatsby? Why did I feel like I knew him? I waited for nearly twenty minutes before someone finally approached me. Her name was Pamela Buchanan. She had told me that the room was for rent but I would be sharing the essentials, like a bathroom, a kitchen, and a living room. I would basically be living with them. She had told me that her mother and father both live with her and her husband, along with little ol’ Penny. Her parents were out on a business trip and they would be back the next day.
Over the next couple of weeks, I had finally moved all of my stuff in and was adjusting to living with the Buchanans.
