What Is to Be Done by Nikolay Chernyshevsky is a romantic novel that has a lot to do with women’s position in the 1800’s. The main character Vera helps the audience see the kind of different relationships women faced as they grew up during this time period. The author wants to show the different perspectives based on the types of relationships Vera had for example with her mother. Marya was a strong women showing tough love to her daughter Vera. Marya realized that the society they were living in did not allow people to move up in class unless they were wealthy. Not that many opportunities were presented for the females and they lacked rights as well as education. The rich people ruled the society and the poor worked for the land with little freedom. Lopukhov is Vera’s younger brother mentor who she decided to marry in order to escape the arranged marriage her parents had with the landowner’s son. She clearly does not love him but they establish a connection and become married. Complete equality is shown between the two sexes on a political, economic and domestic level. Vera and her husband only entered each other’s rooms with permission. They had a respectful marriage and Vera used this to her advantage. A room is specifically set up where they have tea and talk. Vera strives for economic independence by starting her own workshop.
