n the short story, “Rikki-tikki-tavi” written by Rudyard Kipling, the character Rikki-tikki can be described as a valiant mongoose. In this story, Rikki arises conflicts with two deadly cobras named Nag and Nagaina and has to resolve them in order to keep his human family safe. In the beginning of the story, the narrator states, “This is a story of the great war that Rikki-tikki fought single-handed…”(22). This illustrates Rikki as brave in the way that a “war” is usually fought with armies of men, whereas Rikki is fighting one himself single-handedly. The author continues to illustrates that Rikki is courageous when he states “Marks or no marks, do you think it is right for you to eat fledglings out of a nest?” toward the cobra, Nag(24-25).

Rikki Tikki was a true mongoose. Throughout the whole story, Rikki Tikki stayed true. If Rikki Tikki knew that something or someone was going to harm his friends and family, Rikki Tikki would harm them first. Rikki Tikki wouldn’t just talk about what he would do because e would actually do it. Rikki Tikki should be proud of himself because if he were too scared, Nag and Nagaina could just rule the garden and kill everyone and no one would ever stand up to them.…

During the 1860s, in a gloomy, dark short story, “Chickamauga” Ambrose Bierce shows the true horrors of war anticipating condescension imagery, malicious hyperbole and tenacious diction. Bierce point out “ many were streaked and grouted with red” and “he laughed as he watched” to illustrate the innocence version of a romanticize war, but wars are devastation. Bierce use small animals as "enemies" because they symbolize the internal nature of this common boy to go to war, to fight and to kill. Portraying the ruthless war, the boy laughed at the cold bodies “contrast between his laughter” showing how he should act and how he really acted. The readers are disgusted and applauded when “they were his horse” as he rides and play with dead corps…

Columbus did lots of horrifying things to a mass of people; both to the europeans and the natives, yet some people get a day off to celebrate his “achievements.” For example, Columbus selfishly mistreated the natives by being a “greedy imperialist who slaughtered and spread disease among the indigenous people and institutionalized the slave trade.” However, John Sebastiano, president of UNICO believes Columbus “globalized our world.” One can argue, Columbus did do horrible things and that the bad out ways the good because what he did was not acceptable at all. He watched out for himself only and did not care if he was hurting a human population.…

You would be insane not to believe my theme! I know this is true because in the story, by Rudyard Kipling, he had introduced Rikki, the mongoose, and Nag and Nagaina, the two evil cobras. In the rising action of the story, Rikki and the cobras meet, and have disagreements with each other about the way each of them survive, like how Rikki is disappointed in Nag by eating the baby fledgeling out of the birds’ nest, when he should know Nag has to eat something to survive the crucial environment. This statement gives them a dislike to each other. I can compare this to reality because, there are bullies in my school who think they are better than others, but they’re not.…

The experience of a minority in America is fundamentally different than that of a white American. In Sherman Alexie’s Flight Patterns, the reader has an opportunity to delve into the mind of not one, but two completely different sets of minorities and their viewpoints. Using comedy, Alexie touches on the differences between William and Fekadu, their trials and tribulations of the past and present, and most importantly the things they have in common. Unfortunately, the cliché story of an African, African American, American Indian, Asian American or any other minority is bleak, monotonously serious, and lacking of any sense of joy at all.…
