What Is Thirteen Reasons Why Banned

According to the American library association, over 11,300 books have been challenged or banned since 1982. Thirteen Reasons Why by Jay Asher is one of the many books on a banned book list. This book is banned because of the mentioning of suicide, use of drugs, and alcohol. Recently I read this book. By examining the topics of this book, the number of people it has actually helped, and the lesson it teaches, it is clear that this book should not be banned. This book mentions things that teens go through or hear about every day. Every article I have read says the same thing. They all say that Thirteen Reasons Why is banned for suicide, drugs, and alcohol. Hannah Baker, the main character, commits suicide in this book. The whole book is about why she committed suicide. Of course it's gonna “mention suicide”—that's what the book is about. Suicide is a very popular topic that everyone should learn about. In the world we are living in, there's not a day that will go by without you seeing, hearing something about, or maybe even using drugs or alcohol. People started spreading really bad rumors about her, some true, some not. There are a lot of other teens that go through this kind of thing. Asher's book has helped many people. In the article Banned Books Week: 10 most challenged books of 2012 on CNN, Jay Asher said “I received an email from a reader claiming my book kept her from committing suicide. I dare any censor to tell that girl it was inappropriate for her to read my book.” In the same article he also said “I consistently hear readers say my book was the first time they felt understood, which is sad.” This book has made an impact on many people's lives.
