The U.S. is the worlds best economy. In the book Essentials of Sociology by J. M. Henslin, according to the world system theory, “industrialization led four groups of nations. core nations…semiperiphery…periphery…external area” (Henslin, 2012, p 204). The U.S. would fall under core nations, meaning they were one of the first to industrialize and have a capitalistic society. If this is true, then why is there such a struggle for the lower class to get integrated with society? Like N. John stated, “So why aren’t wages going up everywhere? Although he uses this concept to explain suicide rates, one could also use it to explain the class struggle. I believe that people in today’s society people have been classified by their social class. Every person is integrated into a society, in which it is very hard to get out off. The American dream says that a person has the ability to become as rich as they want if they put the time and work in. This seems like an amazing thing right? Of course, but the truth is that this reality has been disappearing. There is no reasonable way for lower class person to raise himself to the upper class. Many factors prohibit him form this. A person needs to be educated in order to make money, nut the fact is that in a society where minimum wage is at 10 dollars an hour, it is simply impossible to do that. This term refers to, “those who make the big decision in U.S. society” (Henslin, 2013). This has become a problem, because as a democratic society we as the people make the decisions on what we need changed, and what we want for our society. Our democratic system involves political leaders that have been chosen by us the people to represent us. The sad truth is that these political leaders are not doing what the society needs. We just simply can’t increase minimum wage to living wage, with out the approval form tour political leaders. If we think about it, the regular people are the ones who struggle day to day not the leader. The power elite are part of the 1% in this country. They are the wealthiest of America, how would they now the struggle of the poor class? These leaders have something called prestige, which is “respect or regard” (Henslin, 2012). The fact is that prestige runs in your social class. The rich have prestige because they are rich. The poor do not have prestige because they are poor. Since we know that prestige means respect, then we can conclude that the poor do not have any respect. To me it seems like a joke to say that you are born into a society where you are not respected, and it is tremendously difficult leaving that society.
