France, Britain, and the US decided to combine their sectors and name the area East Germany. Along with Germany being split, it was also decided that Berlin would be split into another 4 sections also, and given out the same way as Germany was divided out. However, East Berlin happened to be located within Western Germany, which belonged to the Soviets. The Soviet Union differed from the Allies with their want to make Germany pay for all the damages to the war. It was also decided that Germany would give money to the Allies for the cost of the war. However, the payments were deteriorating Germany’s economy, so the Allies decided to lessen the payments that were enforced upon the Germans. The Soviet Union decided to cut off the supplies to East Berlin. After months of trying to block off supplies, and failing because the Allies would send planes filled with supplies everyday, the Soviet Union stopped blocking supplies. A few weeks after that, the Soviets constructed a wall dividing Eastern and Western Berlin. Families were forced apart and anyone who tried to climb over the wall to be free of the Soviets was shot and killed in public. This was officially the start of the Cold War. Tanks were changed from going 5 miles per hour in WW1, and only crushing barbed wire, to going 30 miles per hour and being able to shoot the enemy in WW2. The bombs went from being hand grenades in WW1, to being nuclear bombs capable of destroying cities in the end of WW2. During all three wars, however, the US continued to sent money to aid one or both sides of the war.
