George Boiardi: The Unsung Hero

Improved Essays
George Boiardi was the unsung hero of every team that he graced with his athletic ability. George was a Cornell lacrosse player up until 2004 when he lost his life mid game from a shot that hit him square in the chest. It wasn’t necessarily his statistics that impressed everyone George encountered, but rather his work ethic and the way that he held himself stood out to everyone. George was truly an inspiration to everyone on his team. A selfless, driven, class act that wanted nothing but perfection, is the reason that George earned immortality amongst his peers.
Before his death, George was known to be the quiet person that every team had. Despite his quiet nature, his ability to lead by example was nonetheless a major reason George was even

George was the perfect example of this, as he was essentially a “fountain of positivity”. George never took anything away from anyone. What he did was the opposite, he provided positive thoughts to all and only gave out constructive criticism when the time called for it. The sports world is littered with people whose only goal is to try to bring down those around them. To be a good teammate you need to eliminate the thought of becoming this person. Be the bright spot that everyone not only listens to but comes to for not only for happy thoughts but for ways to better themselves in a positive aspect. Being one of the freshman that plays a majority of minutes, I think that I helped to provide my fellow freshman with some sort of positivity when it comes to frustration. Everyone that comes to play Division 1 soccer at Saint Francis University was most likely best player on their previous teams, but when it comes to college soccer it is a whole different ball game. Some adjust better than others do and I am lucky to have had a successful transition. I could tell that there were some freshman that were having a hard time transitioning, so they would come to me and give me their thoughts about their current situation. What I tell them is that if they really want to play at this level is that they can’t quit when in this tough situation. It does not happen over time, as I have literally thrown out my social life in …show more content…
George was the quintessential example when it came to showing that care is an important part to maintaining a strong team bond. An example of George showed he cared was by driving the freshman from one side of campus to the freshman dorms after practice. This selfless act is just one major way that George showed that great teammates care for other teammates in every aspect of their lives. When you build this personal care, you build a team that cares, and this will lead to great success throughout time. One way I showed care, or tried to at the least, was today after our devastating loss against Saint Francis College. To all the seniors that cared about me as an quiet incoming freshman, I owe them everything that I have accomplished this year. So, when they laid out on the field after conceding a PK in double overtime, I felt it my personal mission to help each and every one of them up and tell them about the great game that they had just played. It is because of this interconnected care that we have between each other that we were even in the position that we were

As a player on a Division I soccer team I have personally experienced the ups and downs of a typical season. You go through a month of preseason which consists of three practices a day and then once school starts you begin 2 months of practice everyday and at least two to three games a week. It is expected by the end of the season that you are run down and ready for a break. This past week I was in the Missouri Valley final round, which has never been done by a Loyola Woman’s soccer team before, and although I was filled with excitement and anticipation leading up to the game I couldn’t ignore the little voice in my head begging for it to be over. Now, I like to think of myself as a morally good person most of the time.…
