What is the Truth About Undocumented Immigrants? Imagine being an undocumented immigrant. Imagine traveling to a new place where your dreams can come true; there are so many opportunities, and everyone is treated equal. Now, try to imagine getting to this dream place and it being nothing like you imagined. This is the reality for most immigrants when they reach the United States. Many people do not personally know what it is like to be undocumented in this country. Research shows that being undocumented, comes with its own stigmas, restrictions, and self-policing. Taxes are seen as way to gain power because people think by paying taxes they have the rights to have a say in this country’s society. Paying taxes is a necessary evil for this country because without taxes the government will be unstable. If one does not pay taxes and is living here they are considered a burden or a freeloader by the rest of society. Some citizens make the assumption that the undocumented people do not pay taxes. The Minuteman believe that they are paying taxes to care of lazy and undocumented people who do not contribute to society. “As a taxpayer, I am heavily burdened to pay for social services that are given to anyone in America, legal or illegal… I object to paying large amounts money to help them be born and educated while American children suffer” (Pallares, Flores-Gonzalez 2010, 186). He came to America for a better life. He struggled for a while in the beginning because he had so many restrictions that were placed on him. Illegal immigrants have everything working against them. Jose was illegal, had a fake social security number, knows very little English, and he is a minority. Jose describes himself as being forced into the “shadows.” The shadows meaning not being seen, hiding in plain sight. Politics are the reason they live in the shadows he was “Denied a legitimate chance at the American Dream” undocumented immigrants are forced to sneak into the country (Angel: 1). Angel snuck into the country via Coyote. To sneak means to do something stealthily, furtively, and without being noticed (Encarta Dictionary). If one has to sneak into the country that means that they were not invited, ultimately giving the people in power the right to do as they please with them. Angel had embodied the fact he was not coming to the U.S legally and that is what the purpose of what law makers and are trying to get
