There are many transitions in families and cultures that mark the transition from childhood to adulthood. My first major milestone which represents the transition to adulthood occurs when I obtained my first job and started working. For my family getting a job signifies a transition into adulthood. My father, mother and all of my uncles all starting working when they turned sixteen. When I was almost sixteen, my parents and I decided it would be time for me to look for a summer job and start working. I was able to secure my first summer job with the Boy Scouts at Camp Pupukea in Hawaii as a camp counselor. At the camp I worked long hours doing everything from camp maintenance, lifeguarding and teaching Merit Badge classes. Working at the camp was a tremendous milestone in my life giving me independence, valuable skills, and a strong work ethic.

By the time I left camp, I had developed strong friendships with a group of people who were complete strangers to me only a brief time ago and had grown to care for them like family. While there I gained valuable leadership, teaching skills and experience from teaching Merit Badge classes to the Scouts and running camp activities. At camp, I taught classes in First Aid, Geocaching, Oceanography, and Archery. While teaching I learned ways of teaching the kids, how to be more patient, and to conduct myself like an authority figure.
