In chapter two of the novel The Absolutely True Diary of a Part-time Indian (2007), Sherman Alexie further elaborates on the struggles the narrator has to go through because of the poor economic circumstances he was born into, as well as introducing characters who are important to him, thus expanding on the world around him. The story takes on a more serious and depressing tone as the narrator describes the dreams his parents could have achieved if they weren’t afflicted by poverty, as well as the death of his dog Oscar, who was a valuable companion whom he cherished deeply and whose death left a huge emotional impact.
