Teen depression is a serious issue and has been around for a long time with sometimes fatal consequences. The teen years is always a weird time, with the many problems like: physical, emotional, psychological and changes that follow this stage of life. Academic, family, or social expectations will create a feeling of rejection and lead to disappointment. Teens are pressured by messages from friends, parents, and the media. Today’s teens see more of the good and bad of life at school, on television, in magazines and the Internet. They are also forced to learn about the threat of sexual diseases and drug use even if they aren't sexually active or using drugs. Each year, about 5,000 people, ages 15 to 24,commit suicide. The rate of suicide for this age group tripled since 1960, that makes it the third leading cause of death in teens and the second leading cause of death among college-age kids.Suicide is the 2nd leading cause of death in people aged 15-24, in 2014 1,668 youths(13-18) committed suicide. Every day 105 americans die by suicide, every 12.3 seconds there is a suicide death in the U.S.; and every 40 seconds there is a suicide death worldwide. Gender wise males take their lives at a rate of 4 times as much as females. 77.9% of suicides are male(firearms are used in 50% of male suicides), but females attempt suicide about 3 times as much as males do(34.8% of female suicides are done with drugs [poisoning] as a method of suicide). Studies show that suicide attempts among young people are based on long-standing problems triggered by an event. Suicidal teens may view a situation as a permanent situation. Feelings of anger combined with guilt can lead to self-destructive acts.Four out of five teens who attempt suicide have given clear warnings. These are the warning signs: Direct and indirect suicide threats, obsessed with death, giving their possessions away, poems or drawings about death, change in appearance and personality, irrational behavior, sense of shame and guilt, irregular sleeping patterns and poor school performance.
