“To Build a Fire” is about a man who gets stranded in the freezing cold wilderness. No one knows his name or why he decided to go into the wild. All we know is he is alone and his only companion is a dog, he is trying to get to a camp were a hot supper is being ready: will he make it or fail. The man goes through lots of challenges.

The short story “Deep Survival” by Laurence Gonzales displays how the protagonist in the short story “To Build a Fire” by Jack London did not have the capacity of a survivor. Gonzales wrote twelve steps on how to survive, the protagonist did not do three of these steps. The protagonist did not stay calm, celebrate his successes, or play, which caused his failure to survive.…

In the story “To Build a Fire,” the man doesn’t listen to anyone; he just does his own thing. The man travels in weather below 50 degrees, doesn’t cook any food, doesn’t go back to the camp, and then freezes to death. A theme from the story is to listen to those more experienced than you. One way the theme is developed is how the man doesn’t listen to the old-timer of Sulpher Creek when he said not to travel in weather under 50 degrees, because the man didn’t listen and decided to do his own way, the man died of ignorance. A quote that supports my reasoning is, “The old-timer on Sulpher Creek was right, he thought in the moment of controlled despair that ensures: after fifty below, a man should travel with a partner.…
