What would one do if they wanted someone else’s life? If that person was Wash, they would even kill someone to get their life. Although the story can be fairly difficult to understand because of the writing style, lots of interesting meanings can be found with a deeper reading. William Faulkner uses his strong writing voice to convey the story “Wash” in a creatively clear way. Including different conflicts, many characters, and relevant setting helps a reader fully understand the story.

Wash’s conflict with Sutpen worsens as soon as his granddaughter, Molly, has a baby girl. Once she is born, Wash believes he has a chance at inheriting the plantation as soon as Sutpen dies. He does everything to try and get close to Sutpen. Wash begins to realize who the real Sutpen is and his internal conflict of hatred shows. “‘You said if she was a mare, you could give her a good stall in the stable’” (6).
