Have you ever wished upon a star in hopes of finding true love, assuming it would come true? Or has it? How would you feel? Would you enjoy it or regret it moments after? In the short story, “The Third Wish” by Joan Aiken the main character, Mr. Peters, is presented with a wish that conveys this exact scenario. It is a complicated story with an intrusive plot that also has some themes and learning experiences. Mr. Peters saved a swan after venturing and exploring a mysteriously spooky forest on the side of a highway. After forcefully saving this swan, he was granted three magical wishes from a tiny green man that seems to be a leprechaun they were given to him in the form of leaves. “Be careful what you wish for” is one of the most famous lines in literature and it is commonly repeated over and over again. A statement like this is clearly accurate as a wish can either ruin your life or make it increasingly better in the matter of an instant. They are extremely deadly and can terminate your life with an overwhelming amount of loopholes. The outcome of any wish has the potential to be disastrous so you must always put significant thought into a wish. Wishes are something not a lot of us come across in our lifetime. Usually, they appear in mythical tales or fictional stories, but never in real life. Just like family and love wishes are something that is very special. Instead, wishes are magical and can give you anything in this universe from 10 billion dollars to 14 new mansions. The idea of wishes is the entire central focus of the text, and it is the reason that the plot is the exact way it is. Mr. Peters wouldn't have even had a wife if it wasn't for the three wishes he was granted. Mr. Peters came across a tiny green man dressed in green and instantly commands, “I expect three wishes, no more and no less”(1). Mr. Peters was instantaneously given the opportunity to change his life entirely. The tiny green man would then proceed to give him advice, and he encouraged him to be very wary of these three wishes that could leave his life in shreds. The man explained to him to be careful as he can be in utter joy or emotionally devastated by the results of the wishes. The leprechaun knew from the start that no good would come out of these wishes. Mr. Peters was very demanding of the wishes, and he didn't even assume any of the possible devastating outcomes. He used up his first wish when he took out a leaf and said, “I wish I had a wife as beautiful as the forest”(1). Due to the loneliness of Mr.Peters, he needed a partner in his life who
