Detective Somerset, played by Morgan Freeman, and his new replacement Detective Mills, Brad Pitt, are both introduced in a case of a man’s gruesome death. There is great imagery when connecting the man’s murder with a deadly sin. In this case, gluttony is the man’s sin. He is seen as a obese man barely able to move with his face stuffed in spaghetti. Though none believe that it is connected to a serial killer until the next day an attorney is killed with the words “greed” painted with blood on the carpet. Specifically, Se7en’s strongest actor is Morgan Freeman who can make a character with clichés and a less exciting script, more enjoyable. His character is knowledgeable who has seen all the violence in a hopeless city, though it is seen he has more depth than that in the script. However, the film is not exactly on Freeman’s point. John Doe, played by Kevin Spacey, is one of the weaker characters. Not only does he has a generic name but, is quite similar to Hannibal Lecter personality-wise in The Silence of the Lambs which came out four years before Se7en.
