He remembers his sore toe and decides to fake a bad pain. He calls Sid over and scares him with his pain. Sid panics and calls over Aunt Polly. Aunt Polly figures out that he is only faking the pain. Tom quickly thinks of another pain to try and fool her. He complains of a really bad toothache. Then Aunt Polly comes once more only to pull out his loose tooth and send him to school. On his way to school, he runs into Huckleberry Finn and starts talking about a way to remove warts. After that, he ends up getting to school late. His teacher demands him confess why he was late. Tom eventually tells the truth. He is told to find a seat. There is an empty seat on the girls’ side of them room next to the girl he loves. He gets in trouble on the boys’ side on purpose because he will get moved to the girls’ side as a punishment. Tom finds out the girl’s name is Becky and he tries to get her interested in his drawing but she gets a little shy. However, she does promise to stay with him at lunch. At lunch, Tom and Becky were sitting in an empty room. Tom proposed Becky to get engaged with him. He explained to her that to engaged to him, they must both say “I love you” and kiss on the lips. “Oh, it’s ever so gay! Why, me and Amy Lawrence---” (Twain 43). He decided he would sneak out of bed and go to a graveyard with Huck to see devils. They end up hearing voices and hide behind someone’s grave, Hoss Williams. Then they decided to peek and saw three adults from town. They seemed they were on a mission. The three men were Dr. Robinson, Muff Potter and Injun Joe. Apparently the two men, Muff Potter and Injun Joe were demanded to dig up Hoss Williams’s corpse. Dr. Robinson and Injun Joe end up getting into a fight. Potter then attacks Dr. Robinson. He then uses Hoss’s tombstone to defend himself knocking Potter out cold. While he is unconscious, Injun Joe stabs Dr. Robinson with Potter’s knife. Witnessing everything, Tom and Huck flee the scene. The boys end up running home paranoid that if they say anything about what they saw and Injun Joe escapes and finds out, he will kill them. After discussing this situation, they decide to make a pact and swear in blood that they will not tell anyone that they saw that incident. “Huck Finn and Tom Sawyer swears they will keep mum about this and they wish they may drop dead in their tracks if they ever tell and rot” (Twain 57).
