Harper Lee wrote one one of the most influential and important books in American history; this legendary book was called To Kill a Mockingbird. Harper Lee published To Kill a Mockingbird in 1960. This book was set place in the 1930’s during the Great Depression. Harper Lee wrote this book as a “social commentary” to describe what actually happens in society. For this reason, in To Kill a Mockingbird, the three main themes that strike the characters in this book are racism, bravery, and morality.

Every single one of the character in this book has their own kind of morality, but all are different and they range from bad morality to good morality. The main example in the book for bad morality is Mayella Ewell. She is the white woman who accused the black man,Tom Robinson, of raping her. Tom Robinson didn’t rape her, and she knows that, she felt like she needed to cover up some guilt of her own. She wanted to cover up the fact that she tempted a negro, she tempted a black man. During the time of the Great Depression in the South, tempting a black man was an unspeakable thing to do. Doing so during this time would make you as low a black person. Mayella tempted Tom, and Tom resisted. As a result of him resisting, she took him to trial and accused him of trying to rape her. The best example of good morality in this book is Atticus. Atticus does the right thing, and he doesn’t judge. For example, he decided to defend Tom to his fullest ability, and tried to convince the white people that he was innocent, and that what they were doing was wrong. He called out all of the white jury and was standing up for what was true and what was right, and made a point that all humans are equal, no matter the skin color.
