Fahrenheit 451 shows the life of a society without books. The book is a representation of what society is going to become if thinking ceases. The characters of the book were being fed emotions that were created by the government. The government had wiped each of their emotions and made them selfish so they wouldn’t revolt against them. Bradbury wanted to show how a society with electronics and no books could make them lifeless. Having a lifeless society can consequently result in people not caring about their surroundings and the people they may hurt, but how does someone become lifeless? She had stated,” The psychiatrist wants to know why I go out and hike around in the forests…(Pg.22). The people around Clarisse had thought she was crazy because she enjoyed looking outside instead of being locked away with the parlor walls. She loved to talk about things that others thought were weird and she even endured hateful words from her peers. Clarisse was raised by a family who read behind closed doors. You can tell she’s odd because she questions Montag and doesn’t fear his job title. Deep down in her heart, she knew that Montag wasn’t like the rest of the firemen. In our society, Clarisse is that peculiar individual that ignites the fire in all and makes people think. For instance, she had stated,”If you showed a driver a green blur, Oh yes! He’d say, that’s grass… White blurs are houses. Brown blurs are cows..” What she was trying to say was that nobody took the time to actually live and enjoy the beauty around. They’d all just sit at home and stare back at a motionless television. Some people don’t realize that the beauty inside their screens is actually all around them. Going out to stores and finding a new place to eat aren’t necessities to live a happy life. That’s what Clarisse was trying to get Montag to understand about the society they lived
