Tales of Bravery have entertained people forever. Four such stories are Beowulf, Gilgamesh, Iliad and the odyssey. In the epic poem the use of the theme of loyalty and description of the epic hero develop the conflict that was present in these ancient societies The theme of Loyalty is evident in two stories. One of the stories is Beowulf, for example when the soldiers face Grendel with Beowulf. ¨ all of Beowulfś band… raised their swords… to protect their prince¨ (Beers 23). Another example of loyalty in Beowulf was when Wiglaf helped beowulf slay the dragon. All of Beowulf soldiers except wiglaf ran. in the Iliad are two such heroes. One is name Hector and is the leader of the Trojan army. Hector leads the safety of his city to go fight achilles. He fights achilles to end the war and to protect his people. Hector realizes he is going to lose because the gods have turned on him but he fights them anyway (Sparknotes¨Iliad¨). Another hero from the Iliad is Even tho he is not A skilled warrior, he fights hector in achilles place to protect achilles reputation. Knowing that death is almost certain Patroclus challenges hector. Patroclus lives up to the ideal that it is more important to die with honor than live as a coward (Beers 56). With this action he saves the reputation of himself and achilles. Another epic is the Odyssey and itś hero is Odysseus. He protects his men on the dangerous journey when he saves them from the lotus eaters and if they would have stayed they would have turned into pigs (Sparknotes ¨Odyessey¨). The greeks also wanted their heroś to be smart. Odysseus defeats the cyclops with his intelligence. Odysseus told the cyclops that his name was nobody so when the cyclops ask for help after odysseus has blinded him, he tells the other cyclopes that nobody has hurt him. This lie allows him to escape from the cyclops. Odysseus is also a hero at home. He shows his skill with his bow an arrow when he shoots the arrow through the axis.
