Lord Of The Flies Leadership Analysis

While reading the book, Lord of the Flies by: William Golding, there are two main leaders. Ralph and Jack. Ralphs leadership approach is democratic and Jacks approach is autocratic. Democratic leaders are people who will give authority to others, encourage participation from the team/group, and relies on respect from others to maintain their role. These types of leaders usually posses decision-making skills that are ‘better’ than the rest of the team/group. Autocratic leaders are people who will centralize authority and derives power from their position. They do this because they want to be in full power and have control of their followers. Lord of the Flies starts off with a plane crash that was carrying a group of British schoolboys. This was caused by the pilot being shoot and killed because of a war that was going on at the time. When the boys realize they are all alone with no parents they must figure out how they are going to survive and get rescued. Ralph, appointed by all the other boys to be leader, tells Jack and his fellow choir members were now going to be hunters and Jack was the leader of them. Ralph continues to express his leadership traits by showing the rest of the boys how to create fire and shelter and proving that he is highly-motivated to help everyone get off the island safely. These themes kept me engaged during my reading and enforced my passion for leadership. Ralph, being one of the main characters also my favorite, throughout the book shows his leadership skills by keeping his followers civilized and focused on getting saved. While Jack focuses on his savagery and being the leader of everyone. Lord of the Flies, will give you a great understanding of leaderships styles based on behaviours, actions, and emotions.
