Summary:
The narrator and her husband go to a nice house for a summer vacation. Jennie is the housekeeper and John’s sister. The narrator suffers from nervous depression and her husband is her doctor. She keeps a secret journal even though part of her treatment is not to write. The narrator starts to go insane and starts to imagine things in the wallpaper. She then starts to start tearing down the wall paper and the husband realizes that she has gone mad and faints.

While trying to measure the area of the cell he trips and notices that his face is over a big abyss in the middle of the cell. He falls back asleep and when he wakes up again he notices a pendulum swinging back and forth slowly lowering that will eventually cut him. He escapes the pendulum by having the rats eat the rope that is constricting him and he suspects that someone is watching him. He then notices that the walls are closing in toward the pit in the middle, but then they stop with very little room and the walls retract to back where they were. The narrator finally gives up and is about to jump into the pit when a French general saves him and the French army has taken over the
