At some point, things take a turn for the worse and Emily shows up at the drugstore looking for poison. When Emily bought arsenic, the town thought of her she was going to commit suicide. Even when she continued to live they never even imagined that the arsenic could be tied to her missing suitor. They continued to view her through rose-colored glasses. The rose given to Emily wasn't a flower, but as a replacement was a rose in the form of rose colored glasses. Basically, failing to notice negative things. Consequently, even when strange smells started coming from her house because of a decaying body, it was discovered they sneaked up to her house and surrounded it with lime to hide the smell. The decaying body smell was Homer. In her mind, she poisoned a disrespectful Homer, because he was threatening to leave. When she killed him, she kept his dead body in the house and slept next to him. She does what she feels necessary in retort to the pressure placed on her by the town.
