Like on page 56 of the Pictures At A Revolution says, “In 1964, black Americans were still virtually invisible in filmed entertainment.” Most black Americans in films didn’t have significant roles, mainly they were playing extras, but never a lawyer or a doctor. The film industry started to change little by little for African Americans, especially when Sidney Poitier was the first black man to win Best Actor. Sidney Poitier then played lead rolls in two major films that came out during the revolution of Hollywood, like the film just watched, Guess Who’s Coming to Dinner, and the movie tomorrow, In the Heat of the Night. This generation was filled with a lot of young adults who were going to college. College was a good place to get the attention of young adults and to speak their minds. They were on their own and could now expand on their own ideas. This was incorporated throughout the film. The two main characters John and Joanne meet at a college meeting in Hawaii. The house keeper Tilly had a young helper (Dorothy) with her and in one scene she was seen dancing away with a young man, which in the 60’s, a lot of young adults would do. Then Joanne’s parents go for a drive to get some ice cream and clear their heads and when they are leaving the drive thru, the father backs into a car and has a screaming match with the other driver.
