For as long as schools have been in existence, there have been complications with bullying and peer victimization. Prior to the 1980’s, bullying and peer victimization were considered as norms or merely initiations of rites of passage (Allanson); however, due to the psychological issues and deaths that these complications have brought to several students, adults start to recognize these as vital problems that needed immediate attention. The book did not mention anything about Hannah’s parents filing a lawsuit. As opposed to the book, the TV series significantly reveals her parents’ lawsuit against the school. This modification embarked the mayhem and distress amongst the characters involved in the tapes which added spice to the scenarios. Another change in the plot of the story is the use of cellular phones and social media in the scene where Hannah and Jason made out. The book only reveals a suggestive photo of Hannah in which the entire school only ended up seeing; however, the TV series illustrates that Justin takes the suggestive photo using his cell phone and sends that digital file to everyone across the school, giving them a copy of the photo. As we know that technology is a part of everyone’s contemporary life, we can say that this alteration was intentionally made to enable contemporary viewers to relate to the scenario. Lastly, the book reveals that Hannah’s suicidal death was caused by swallowing pills; however, the TV series revealed that she slit her wrist in the bathtub using a sharp razor blade. The switch was made to bestow greater impact with Hannah’s death than merely seeing Hannah take a bunch of pills. As a result, these modifications in the plot of the story all boil down to having the exact same purpose—to capture the audiences’ emotions and attention. This causes the viewers to convince their friends and fellow students to watch the TV series. As mentioned above, as more people watch the show, the number of people becoming aware of the potential effects of bullying and peer victimization also increases. Therefore, the modifications in the plot of the story have also dynamically reinforced the deliverance of the original author’s purpose of sharing
